New to TBR is Outlier, a brand with an approach to garment design based on functionality ahead of aesthetic appeal. That’s not to say the product doesn’t look good, but the true selling point on each individual product is the carefully thought out and meticulously constructed materials used to construct each piece.
We’ve seen a hell of a lot of product in our time over the years, but nothing that comes close to replicating these items. They really are something of a work of art and we invite you to swing past and see everything first hand.

PRODUCT: Outlier Merino T-Shirt.
DETAILS:
Despite centuries of textile innovation merino wool is still the best performance fabric in the world. Its soft luxurious hand feel is nothing like traditional wools and is also infinitely better than both the plasticky ooze of a synthetic wicking material and clammy stink of wet cotton. Merino wicks sweat away from your body, cooling you off and keeping you dry and comfortable in any condition. Yet merino retains its insulation abilities when wet so it keeps you warm in cooler conditions too. It’s naturally anti-microbial so you can wear it for days without it stinking like cotton and polyester do after just hours. And because it’s so much finer of a fabric than regular wools it doesn’t itch at all, and can be machine washed.
Cyclists have known about merino for ages. The classic wool cycling jerseys were all made with merino and the best still are, despite the plague of polyester that infects so many bike shops. Recently hikers and outdoorsmen have caught on to merino too. But the ultrafine merino they use is a much higher grade.
The Merino wool is grown in the high mountains of New Zealand. These Merino sheep flourish in extreme environments where the land is rugged and free from low lying brush. This allows the Merino’s fleece to be super clean and soft, creating the purest and highest quality Merino wool fibers in the world. Merino wool, like anything else, comes in different grades or classes known as Ultafine all the way up to Strong grade. The grades are based on micron measurements (how fine the fibers are in diameter). and the Empire Merino Tee is a 17.5 grade, the finest available on the market.
Merino fibers have a complex structure with a hydrophobic exterior (water repelling) and a hydrophilic interior (water holding). This makes the fabric dry to the touch yet wicking moisture away from the body at the same time. Combined with your body’s ability to create heat, the fabric dries much faster creating a cycle of moisture evaporation. Not only that but it’s also odorless and stays that way by being naturally anti-microbial. This means odor doesn’t bond to the material because bacteria can’t find a solid environment to grow on.

PRODUCT: Outlier Workwear Pants.
DETAILS: A pair of pants stripped down to it’s most minimal form and rebuilt for pure function in a 21st century city. Hardwearing, comfortable, tough and honest. The Outlier Workwear cut uses the base 4Season fabric which is a durable tech fabric – abrasion resistant and wicks moisture away from your body. In light rain, it’s water resistant and raindrops bead up and roll away. It’s also has a nano tech fabric treatment modeled after the surface of a lotus leaf, What that means is that the surface is a fractal with no repeating surface structure upon which oil or stains can bond.
To top it off, it’s made to the bluesign environmental standards of Switzerland. The fabric is woven and dyed in a manner which minimizes waste, reduces emissions and avoids the toxic chemicals common in much of the textile industry. Technically this fabric is 80% Nylon, 10% Polyester and 10% Spandex. You can machine wash it warm, and machine dry it warm as well; although it’s not really necessary given how fast it dries. Quick note, machine drying does help re-up the lotus effect, as does ironing. The Outlier Workwear pants are an attempt to make something better than jeans, an anti-jean if you will. They don’t use denim, and aren’t too concerned about fashion and make no attempt at “authenticity.” When Levi-Strauss invented the jean, he tried to make the best pants he could with the technology of his day, which is exactly what Outlier did. They didn’t study some long dead miner’s trousers and then carefully distress the garment to match. They didn’t track down some antique loom and use it to make their fabric exactly the way it was back then. You don’t need to wear these pants for six months to break them in just right, they’re just a simple and strong garment you can live in day in and day out.

PRODUCT: Outlier Winterweight OG Pants.
DETAILS:
The Winterweight fabric is a heavier fleeced back version of the core 4Season fabric with a 3XDry Treatment. Designed to keep you warm and dry no matter where you outdoors, yet still look good and wear comfortably when you get inside. A four-way stretch ensures you can move freely, handle the repetitive motion of cycling.
The 3XDry treatment is directional. It pushes water in just one direction, away from your body. It wicks away the sweat and moisture, breathes as well as you do, and is seriously water resistant. Most rain, snow or slush just beads up and rolls away. It’s a softshell so eventually it will saturate in intense conditions but when it does get wet, you’ll find yourself dry in 10-20 minutes when safe from the elements. The doubleweave fabric has Cordura woven towards the outside for durability and a soft fleecy interior for a beautiful warmth and comfort.
SIZES: 30/32/34/36 – Model is 178cm and wears a 32.
